Presentation of Cuevas del Campo

The municipality of Cuevas del Campo (2,131 inhabitants in 2008; 9,700 ha; municipal website) is located on the border with the Province of Jaén, 130 km north-east of Granada.
Cuevas del Campo was originally a farmer's hamlet named Campo de los Aljibes (The Field of the Water Tanks, refering to tanks built by the Moors, rather than by the Romans), renamed in the 19th century Cuevas del Campo de los Aljibas (refering to the traditional cave dwellings). The municipality of Cuevas del Campo was established by Royal Decree No. 2,916, adopted on 21 November 1980 and published on 16 January 1981 in the Spanish official gazette, No. 14, pp. 1,047-1,048 (text), separating from the municipality of Zújar.

Coat of arms: Quarterly, 1. Argent a mount vert charged with three caves [cuevas] argent, 2. Vert a pair of mules contourned pulling a swing plough all argent, 3. Vert two sheaves of wheat or placed per bend, 4. Or a key sable placed per bend. Grafted in base, argent a pomegranate vert faceted gules leaved and slipped vert. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

The mounts allude to the local topography. The caves represent the provisional dwellings established by the inhabitants of Zújar when cultivating the land. The mules, the swing plough and wheat are the symbols of the agricultural resources. The town's key symbolizes the municipal status obtained in 1980. The pomegranate (granada) represents the Province of Granada and the contribution of the town to the reconquest of the Granada by the Catholic Monarchs.
