Presentation of Cúllar Vega

The municipality of Cúllar Vega (7,909 inhabitants in 2013; 435 ha; municipal website) is located in the Granada Plain (vega), 10 km south-west of Granada.

Mentioned for the first time in a written document in the 12th century, the name of the village (aka Cular and Cúllar de la Vega) comes from the Arab word qûllar, "a height", itself probably originating from the Latin word collum. This origin might indicate that there was a Roman villa on the site of Cúllar.
The Muslims increased agriculture by developing irrigation; nothing changed after the Christian reconquest, until King Filip II expelled the Moriscos from Granada after the Alpujarras rebellions (1568 and 1571). Resettlement of the area started in 1571, and a few years later the limits of the territory of Cúllar were fixed, nearly equivalent to the limits of the modern municipality.

Symbols of Cúllar Vega

The flag and arms of Cúllar Vega, adopted on 30 July 2009 by the Municipal Council and submitted on 14 August 2009 to the Directorate General of the Local Administration, are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 1 September 2009 by the Directorate General of the Local Administration and published on 14 September 2009 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 180, p. 32 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Panel in proportions 3:2 (length to width), horizontally divided into three stripes of equal height, from top to bottom, green, white and blue. In the center of the panel, the municipal coat of arms.
Coat of arms: Per fess, 1. Vert three wheat spikes in bend, pale and bend sinister tied in base by a scroll all or, 2a. Argent three fesses wavy azure, 2b. Argent a pomegranate proper leaved and slipped vert faceted gules. The shield surmounted by a Royal Spanish crown closed.

The green colour represents the Granada Plain. The white colour represents the Sierra Nevada. The waves recall that water is a significant component of the Plain, especially river Dílar that waters the municipal territory. The wheat spikes symbolize agriculture. The pomegranate (granada) represents the Province of Granada.

Proposed flags of Cúllar Vega - Images by Ivan Sache, 25 July 2008

The flag of Cúllar Vega was selected in a public contest organized from 15 July to 15 September 2008 by the municipal administration. Mayor Juan de Dios Moreno said that the four flag proposals were designed by Antonio Nieto Carnicer, an heraldist from Seville.[Ideal, 22 July 2008]
The four proposed flags, once shown on the municipal website, were:
1. Horizontally divided white-green with the coat of arms in the middle
2. Horizontally divided green-white with the coat of arms in the middle
3. Horizontally divided green-white-blue with the coat of arms in the middle
4. Horizontally divided blue-white-green-white-blue (1:2:6:2:1) with the coat of arms in the middle.
Proposal No. 3 was selected, with 55.6% of the 10,297 votes. The new flag was expected to be officially presented on 28 February, the Day of Andalusia. [Ideal, 16 September 2008]
For some reason, the inauguration was postponed to 23 February 2010. [La Opinión de Granada, 3 March 2010].
