Symbols of Almonaster la Real

The flag (photos) and arms of Almonaster la Real, adopted on 25 September 1996 by the Municipal Council and validated on 4 November 1998 by the Royal Academy of Córdoba, are prescribed by Decree No. 4, adopted on 12 January 1999 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 16 February 2009 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 20, pp. 1,937-1,938 (text). This was confirmed by a Resolution adopted on 30 November 2004 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 20 December 2004 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 246, pp. 28,986-29,002 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: In proportions 11:18, purple, with a dark yellow stripe parallel to the hoist. in length 1/5 of the flag's length, embattled of six yellow and five purple pieces. In the middle, the local coat of arms.
Coat of arms: Shield in Spanish shape. Purpure a lion rampant or langued and armes gules, a bordure of Castile and León. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

The symbols were designed by Juan José Antequera.
The coat of arms is a "rehabilitation" of the arms used since the 19th century, with minor chromatic corrections in the bordure - the lion gules corrected to purpure, the castle corrected to port and windows azure. The Royal crown closed was substituted to the crown open, and the shield was re-designed in Spanish instead of French shape.
The lion, probably representing León, has been used at least since 1843; the bordure representing Castile and León appeared in the 1920s.
