Presentation of Corteconcepción

The municipality of Corteconcepción (552 inhabitants in 2015; 4,900 ha) is located 120 km north-east of Huelva.

Corteconcepción is the proud home town of the ham slicer José Joaquín Vázquez.
Traditional ham slicing is exercized as an art in all producing areas in Spain, especially Andalusia, with the organization of competitions at the local, regional and national level. The Asociación Onubense de Cortadores de Jamón (Association of the Huelva Ham Slicers) was established in April 2014 in Valverde del Camino to improve the ranking of the province in slicing competitions.
José Joaquín Vázquez, already awarded with 16 prizes in competitions organized in Extremadura and Andalusia, won on 25 January the 2nd Andalusian Championship of Ham Slicing, organized in Jaén - in clear, he was recognized the best ham slicer in Andalusia. A few months later, he ranked 3rd in the 6th National Encounter of Ham Slicers, organized in Madrid. Working in a slaughterhouse since the age of 16, the champion, now aged 34, was spotted by the famous slicer José Antonio Artes "El Vitamina", who invited him to slice ham in a wedding party, and, subsequently, encouraged him to register in competitions. Ruled by a strict charter, the competitions usually last two hours and a half; the jury assesses the slicer's clothing, his professional style, the straightness of the slicing, the number of dishes prepared and their aesthetics, and the weight of ham before and after slicing.
José Joaquín Vázquez won his first award by presenting a dish made of slices organized in a flower-like pattern. Now the local hero of his village, he is supported in all the competitions by a group of aficionados.

Symbols of Corteconcepción

The flag (photo, photo) and arms of Corteconcepción, adopted on 26 June 1998 by the Municipal Council, are prescribed by Decree No. 240, adopted on 13 December 1999 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 20 January 2000 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 7, pp. 689-690 (text). This was confirmed by a Resolution adopted on 30 November 2004 by the Directorate General of the Local Administration and published on 20 December 2004 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 246, pp. 28,986-29,002 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular, in proportions 11 x 18, with five parallel stripes perpendicular to the hoist, the first and the fifth, white, of 1/8 of the flag's width, the second and the fourth, yellow, of 1/16, and the third, or central, blue, of 5/8. Charged in the center with the coat of arms of the place.
Coat of arms: Azure a Marian monogram or superimposed with a scallop argent and cantonned with mill stones argent. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

The symbols were proposed by Juan José Antequera.
The arms were designed from scratch. The Marian monogram recalls the Nuestra Señora de la Immaculada Concepción church, the town's namesake, corte meaning "a yard", here "a hamlet". The scallop represents the town's patron saint, St. John the Baptist. The millstones recall the several mills once operated in the town; the charter granted the title of villa , released in 1816, and the town's regulations, released two years later, list 21 flour mills and another five oil mills.
