Presentation of La Granada de Riotinto

The municipality of La Granada de Riotinto (locally known as La Alfilla; 202 inhabitants in 2015; 4,400 ha; municipal website) is located 100 km north-east of Huelva.

La Granada de Riotinto was first documented in 1630 as La Adelfilla, a community made of the two villages of La Adelfilla (named for a fountain) and Granada La Vieja (named for a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Granada) and other scattered hamlets now depopulated. Subsequently known as La Granada, the municipality was renamed in 1917-1918 as La Granada de Riotinto, to prevent postal and administrative confusion with the town of Granada.

Symbols of La Granada de Riotinto

The flag and arms of La Granada de Riotinto were adopted on 3 March 1997 by the Municipal Council. The process of official registration does not appear to have been completed yet.
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: A green panel charged in the center with a yellow pomegranate slipped and leaved of the same and faceted in red.
Coat of arms: Vert a pomegranate or slipped and leaved of the same faceted gules. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

The symbols were proposed on 15 May 1995 by Juan José Antequera.
The flag is a banner of the canting arms (granada, "a pomegranate"), which are organized in a different way from those of Granada, for the sake of differentiation.
