Presentation of Zufre

The municipality of Zufre (886 inhabitants in 2015; 34,100 ha; municipal website) is located 130 km north-east of Huelva.

ufre was already settled in the 3rd millennium BC, as evidenced by the dolmens (megalithic funerary monuments) of Jarrama, Casas Nuevas, La Adelfa, and Monte Acosta. Two settlements from the Age of Bronze, made of huts surrounded by a wall, and several tombs were excavated in La Papua and El Trastejón.
The Romans exploited mines, for instance in La Vicaria, from the 1st century BC to the 2nd century; villae were scattered all over the municipal territory, for instance in Monte Acosta, La Boticaria, Huerta de los Llanos, and La Zarzuela. Fragments of altars, columns and capitals were also excavated in the urban nucleus of Zufre.
During the Muslim rule, Zufre was an important town, surrounded by a wall of 1,500 m in perimeter, defended by towers. The urban design of the town, with narrow, irregular streets, dates back to that period.
