Presentation of Ardón

The municipality of Ardón (629 inhabitants in 2009; 4,865 ha; municipal website) is located in the southeast of León Province, 20 km of León. The municipality is made of the six villages of Ardón (capital), Benazolve, Cillanueva, Fresnellino del Monte, San Cibrián de Ardón and Villalobar.

Ardón, probably a Visigoth anthroponym, was originally used to name a monastery founded c. 915 by the Asturian Count Berulfo in Cillanueva (originally, Cellanova, lit., "the new cell"); in 974, the secondary seat of the monastery, set up in Rozuela, was listed as the Sts. Justus and Pastor Monastery de Val de Ardón en Val de Mahude. The latter name (also written Mahaznud or Mahmute) reflects the settlement of the area by Mozarab colonists, who brought relics of the "child saints" Justus and Pastor, martyred c. 304 in Complutum (Alcalá de Henares). The two monasteries of Cillanueva and Rozuela, ruled by the same abbot and sponsored by the Kings of León in the 10th-11th centuries, disappeared in the 12th century; nothing has remained of them but documents kept in the archives of the León Cathedral, including the Nodicia de Kesos (Cheese List, 959/974), considered as the oldest document written in Iberian Romance (Latin mixed with Leonese).
