Presentation of Cea

The municipality of Cea (530 inhabitants in 2010; 1,234 ha; municipal website) is located in the southeast of León Province. The municipality is made of the villages of Cea (capital), Bustillo de Cea, Saelices del Río and San Pedro de Valderaduey.

Cea developed around a castle built in 866-879, with a three-storeyed tower added in the 15th century and still there. Of its seven sanctuaries recorded in the 16th century, the village has kept only the St. Mary church and the St. Martin hermitage. The medieval bridge over river Cea was rebuilt in 1638 by Pedro Cayón; eight-arched, the bridge was used in the 12th century by the busy road known as the "Old Sahagún Way".
Saelices del Río, named for the St. Felix (San Félix), was incorporated in 904 into the Sahagún monastery. In the middle of the 20th century, Saelices del Río was the seat of a municipality also including Bustillo de Cea.
The local hero of Cea is the athlete Margarita Ramos (b. 1966), holder of the national record in shot put (17.93 m).

The flag and arms of Cea, designed by Pío Cimadevilla Sánchez, are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 23 June 2008 by the Municipal Council, signed on 6 June 2008 [which does not make sense, regarding the adoption date] by the Mayor, and published on 24 June 2008 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 120, p. 12,605 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Quadrangular flag, with proportions 1:1, tierced diagonally, the triangle at fly yellow, the central bend blue and the triangle at hoist yellow. In the middle of the flag is placed the municipal coat of arms in full color.
Coat of arms: Or a bend sable an escutcheon argent fessy wavy azure. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown open.

The symbols were inaugurated on 22 November 2008, during the St. Cecilia Festival, by Isabel Carrasco, President of the Government of Castilla y León (press release).
