Presentation of Izagre

The municipality of Izagre (184 inhabitants in 2015; 4,423 ha; municipal website) is located in the southeast of the Province of León, on the border with the Province of Valladolid, 50 km of León. The municipality is made of the villages of Izagre (73 inh.; capital), Albires (63 inh.) and Valdemorilla (74 inh.).

Izagre, named for an Arab word meaning "non irrigated land", is the birth place of Cristóbal Vaca de Castro (c. 1492-1566; biography). Upon recommendation of Cardinal García de Loaysa y Mendoza (1478-1546), Archbishop of Seville, King Charles I appointed Vaca de Castro as a judge and commissioned him to solve the war that opposed different parties in Peru. After the assassination of Francisco Pizzarro and the election of Diego de Almagro el Mozo as Governor of Peru, Vaca de Castro proclaimed himself Governor and Captain General of the Royal Army. Defeated in the battle of Chupas (16 September 1542), Almagro was summarily executed. Back to Spain in 1545, Vaca de Castro was cleared of charges of illegal enrichment and appointed Commander of the Order of St. James. Vaca de Castro served as President of the Council of Castile from 1557 to 1561.

Symbols of Izagre

The flag and arms of Izagre are prescribed by an Agreement adopted on 23 November 2015 by the Municipal Council, signed on 4 January 2016 by the Mayor, and published on 18 January 2016 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 10, p. 1,127 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular, in proportions 2:3, crimson red with a green triangle bordered in golden yellow, with the base along the hoist and the point at mid-fly, surmounted by another triangle, white with the same base and the point in the midpoint of the panel, charged in the middle with the municipal coat of arms in full colours.
Coat of arms: Per fess, 1a. Gules a pigeon house or, 1b. Argent a lion rampant purpure crowned langued and armed or, 2. Or three banners gules in fess. Inescutcheon vert a spike or. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

Pigeon houses appear to be emblematic components of the heritage of the Province of León. The León Provincial Ethnographical Museum (Mansilla de las Mulas) keeps a collection of 14 scale models of pigeon house, the Valdemorillo (Izagre) pigeon house included.
