Presentation of Luyego

The municipality of Luyego (780 inhabitants in 2010; 13,231 ha) is located in the southwest of León Province, 70 km of León. The municipality is made of the villages of Luyego (capital), Priaranza de la Valduerna, Quintanilla de Somoza, Tabuyo del Monte, Villalibre de Somoza and Villar de Golfer.

Luyego and its villages, resettled in the 9th century, belonged to the Bishop of Astorga. In the 15th century, most of them were transferred to the Lords of los Bazán.
Tabuyo del Monte was mentioned for the first time in 1205, as Tabulo. The name of the village comes from Latin tabula, "a table", referring here to flat land suitable for agriculture. The Tabuyo Idol, kept in the San Marco Provincial Archeological Museum, is a rectangular (141 cm x 86 cm) stone stele engraved with an anthropomorphic figure, dated c. 2000 years BC (Diario de León, 12 June 2010).
