The municipality of Quintana del Marco (444 inhabitants in 2010; 2,336 ha) is located in the south of León Province, 60 km of León.

Quintana del Marco was a significant settlement in the Roman times (presentation). Remains of a Roman villa found in 1899 north of the village have yielded mosaics, marble statues and other artefacts kept in the National Archeologic Museum and in the León Museum. A bust of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, incorporated into the facade of the tower of the parish church, is locally said to represent St. Peter.
in the 15th century, the Quiñones, Counts of Lara, built a castle in Quintana del Marco, of which the donjon has been preserved. Suero de Quiñones, the son of Diego Fernández de Quiñones, the first Count of Lara, used to challenge the most famous knights in Europe to cross the bridge over river Órbigo and to fight with him according to the chivalric rules of the time.

Symbols of Quintana del Marco

The flag and arms of Quintana de Marco are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 29 April 1998 by the Leon Provincial Government and published on 27 May 1998 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 98 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular, with proportions 2:3, vertically divided red at hoist and white at fly. In the middle of the flag is placed a rectangle with counterchanged colors, half white and half red.
Coat of arms: Per pale gules and argent a three-arched bridge counterchanged. The shield surmounted with a Royal crown closed.

The flag is an elegant simplification of the coat of arms. Cabañas de Raras has a similar flag, with blue instead of red.
