The municipality of Becerril de la Sierra (5,351 inhabitants in 2014; 3,035 ha; municipal website) is located in the north-west of the Community of Madrid, in the National Park of the Sierra de Guaderrama, 50 km of Madrid.

Becerril de la Sierra was probably established in the 12th-13th century; primary sources are lacking since the municipal archives have been lost. The village was first documented in 1365 in the founding charter of the Real de Manzanares. Becerril was granted the status of villa in 1636 by Philip IV upon request of the Duke of the Infantado; the status was confirmed in 1658 by the 7th Duke of the Infantado, Rodrigo de Mendoza y Sandoval, Marquis of Santillana and Count of the Real de Manzanares.
During the Civil War, Becerril, located quite far form the frontline, was used as a shelter by the inhabitants of the neighbouring places, such as Guadarrama and Los Molinos, threatened by destruction.

Symbols of Becerril de la Sierra

The flag (photos, photo, photo) of Becerril de la Sierra is prescribed by a Decree adopted on 20 November 1986 by the Government of the Community of Madrid and published on 22 December 1986 in the official gazette of the Community of Madrid, No. 303, p. 3 (text) and on 20 January 1987 in the Spanish official gazette, No. 17, p. 16,152 (text).
The flag is described as follows:

Flag: Blue, charged with three white mountains. Proportions shall be 2:3 (one and a half longer than wide).

The flag appears to be sometimes used, officially, charged with the municipal coat of arms (photo).

The coat of arms of Becerril de la Sierra is prescribed by Royal Decree No. 234, adopted on 1 February 1982 and published on 10 February 1982 in the Spanish official gazette, No. 35, p. 3,407 (text).
The coat of arms is described as follows:

Coat of arms: Azure a three-peaked mountain argent the central peak higher ensigned by a sledgehammer or and a chisel of the same. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

The mountains (sierra) make the arms canting. The quarryman's tools recall that stone extraction was once a main source of income in the village.
