Presentation of Fuenlabrada

The municipality of Fuenlabrada (195,864 inhabitants in 2014, therefore the 4th most populous municipality in the Community; 3,941 ha; municipal website) is located 20 km south of Madrid.

Fuenlabrada was established in the 12th century, when a dozen of families re-settled the villages of Loranca and Fregacedos. Threatened by their neighbours who stole their water, cattle and food, the colonists moved in the 14th century to the present site of the downtown of Fuenlabrada. The town maintained its privileges granted by the Catholic Monarchs until the end of the feudal system, winning quite a great number of lawsuits.
In the survey ordered in 1571 by Philip II, Pedro Montero and Juan Holgado answered that Fuenlabrada was named for a fountain (fuente) built (labrada) of stones, probably of Moorish origin. This must refer to the fountain of Pregacedos, disappeared long ago.

Symbols of Fuenlabrada

The flag (photo, photo, photo, photo, photo) and arms of Fuenlabrada are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 7 May 2009 by the Government of the Community of Madrid and published on 8 June 2009 in the official gazette of the Community of Madrid, No. 134, p. 70 (text) and on 10 July 2009 in the Spanish official gazette, No. 166, pp. 57,995-57,996 (text).
The symbols were originally adopted on 2 December 2004 by the Municipal Council. The proposed, traditional flag and arms were validated on 4 October 2007 by the Heraldry Assessors (Royal Academy "Matritense" of Heraldry and Genealogy), who turned down the logotyped symbols. The Municipal Council adopted the traditional symbols of 5 February 2009, postponing the issue of the logotyped symbols.
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular panel, in proportions 2:3. Horizontally divided in the middle, the upper part white and the lower part blue. In the center is placed the municipal coat of arms inscribed on a white disk.
Coat of arms: Per fess, 1a. Azure a fountain argent, 1b. Castile (Gules a castle or port and windows azure), 2. Or five furrows azure superimposed by two branches of olive vert. The shield surmounted by a Royal Spanish crown.

The arms represent the fountain [fuente] and the arable land [campos de labranza] at the origin of the town, and the Kingdom of Castile. The olive branch says that Fuenlabrada is a peaceful and socially interactive town.

The logotyped flag is similar to the official one, the official coat of arms being replaced by the logotyped arms. Of blue and white colours, the logotyped arms keep the elements of the official coat of arms, arranged differently, and adds significant elements, such as the water waves, which represent a town that increases and progress towards integration.
