Presentation of Gargantilla del Lozoya y Pinilla de Buitrago

The municipality of Gargantilla del Lozoya y Pinilla de Buitrago (362 inhabitants in 2014; 2,412 ha; municipal website) is located in the north of the Community of Madrid.

Gargantilla del Lozoya y Pinilla de Buitrago is made of two villages, merged into a single municipality at the end of the 19th century. Known as Gargantilla del Lozoya, the municipality was renamed Gargantilla del Lozoya y Pinilla de Buitrago by a Decree adopted on 31 August 2000 by the Government of the Community of Madrid and published on 8 May 2001 in the official gazette of the Community of Madrid, No. 110, p. 16,600 (text). The name change was originally approved on 5 August 1999 by the Municipal Council.
Gargantilla del Lozoya was established by colonists from Garganta de los Montes, who fled an epidemic or could no longer pay the feudal taxes. The village of Santiago was deserted long time ago, of which only the chapel has remained. Juana la Beltraneja was proclaimed heiress of Castile and engaged with the Duke of Guyenne, the brother of King of France Louis XI, in Gargantilla del Lozoya.
Pinilla de Buitrago, first documented in the 16th century, was separated from the Community of the Town and Land of Buitrago in 1753.
