Presentation of Meco

The municipality of Meco (13,133 inhabitants in 2014; 3,511 ha; tourism website) is located in the east of the Community of Madrid, on the border with Castlla-La Mancha (Province of Guadalajara), 10 km of Alcalá de Henares and 40 km of Madrid.

Meco, of probable Moorish origin, was part of the Community of the Town and Land of Alcalá de Henares, established after the reconquest of the Kingdom of Toledo. Íñigo López de Mendoza, 2nd Count of Tendilla and 1st Marquis of Mondéjar, obtained in 1487 from Pope Innocent VIII a Bull significantly relaxing the prescriptions of Lent fast for his vassals, soon famous as the Bull of Meco. In 1772, Clement XIV released a Brief regulating the right of asylum in the Archbishopric of Toledo, exclusively granted to the parish church of Meco. Erroneously considered as a Bull, the Brief is the origin of the pessimistic dictum No te salvará ni la Bula de Meco (Nothing will save you, not even the Bull of Meco).
