Presentation of Almogía

The municipality of Almogía (3,826 inhabitants in 2015, 16,400 h; municipal website) is located 25 km north-west of Málaga.

Almogía, of Arab origin as Al-Mexia, was named either for the Mexi lineage or for an Arab world meaning "good". At the time of Omar Ben Hafsun, the local fortress formed, together with the castles of Hins Camara and Hins Xan Biter, the defensive belt of Málaga. King Ferdinand obtained on 10 May 1487 the surrender of the town, which became a vassal of the Crown of Castile but kept its own Municipal Council (aljama). Only one of the seven towers that defended the castle has been preserved until now.
In 1570, the revolted Moriscos seized the castle, defended by 500 men commanded by Francisco Sánchez de Córdoba. After having been expelled form the fortress, the rebels were transferred to other parts of the country.
