Presentation of Cómpeta

The municipality of Cómpeta (3,503 inhabitants in 2015, 5,470 ha; municipal website) is located 50 km east of Málaga.

Cómpeta is said to have been a place where the inhabitants of the region met for trading purpose and the celebration of Compitalia, which honoured the Lares Compitales, household deities of the crossroads. The town was first mentioned on 29 April 1487, among the villages of the Sierra de Bentomiz transferred to the Catholic Monarchs; the town counted then some 600 inhabitants.

Symbols of Cómpeta

The flag of Cómpeta (photo, photo) is horizontally divided blue-white with the municipal coat of arms in the center. The flag does not appear to have been officially registered.

The coat of arms of Cómpeta is prescribed by an Order adopted on 10 March 1986 by the Directorate General of the Local Administration and published on 8 April 1986 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 29, p. 958 (text). This was confirmed by a Resolution adopted on 30 November 2004 by the Directorate General of the Local Administration and published on 20 December 2004 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 246, pp. 28,986-29,002 (photo).
The coat of arms is described as follows:

Coat of arms: Per fess, 1. Azure a fortified castle or, with three towers, three ports and three windows masoned sable port and windows gules, 2. Argent two grapevines vert. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

The Royal Academy of History validated the proposed arms "without any objection". The "odd architecture" represents the fortress built by Philip II. The grapevines represents the famous Cómpeta wine.
[Boletín de la Real Academia de la Historia. 1986. 183:2, 314]

Cómpeta organizes every 15 August the Wine Night (presentation). Originally, the winegrowers of the village paid homage to the Virgin of the Ascension the day before starting harvest. In 1973, Aurelio Fernández Navas offered wine to everyone during the night. The Wine Night was subsequently registered as a Festival of National Interest for Tourism.
