The municipality of Autilla del Pino (240 inhabitants in 2009; 3,458 ha; municipal website) is located 10 km from Palencia.

Autillo del Pino was probably named from Latin name altam and suffix -elam, meaning together "a small height", "del Pino" referring to a rocky mountain. It has nothing to do with a tawny owl (autilla), nor with pines.
At the end of the 11th century, the place was known as Villa Ota or Villa Otiella, alluding to the upper village, located on a plateau 860 m asl and known as the Mirador of the Tierra de Campos. The village was once protected by walls, of which some gates have been preserved.

Symbols of Autilla del Pino

The flag and arms of Autillo del Pino are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 12 December 2005 by the Municipal Council, signed on 13 December 2005 by the Mayor, and published on 23 December 2005 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 246, p. 22,033 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Quadrangular flag with proportions 1:1, gyronny of eight pieces, four white and four red. In the middle of the flag is placed the municipal coat of arms in full colors.
Coat of arms: Azure a fortified town or roofed gules, the gate charged with an escutcheon argent a pine vert fructed three pine cones or.

The fortified town recalls the strategic location of the village; the pine alludes to the spurious etymology of the village name.
