Presentation of Renedo de la Vega

The municipality of Renedo de la Vega (231 inhabitants in 2009; 2,225 ha; unofficial webpage) is located in the center of Palencia Province, 60 km from Palencia. The municipality is made of the villages of Renedo de la Vega (104 inh.; capital), Albalá de la Vega (22 inh.), Moslares de la Vega (55 inh.) and Santillán de la Vega (50 inh.).

Renedo de la Vega is listed in Becerro de las Presentaciones de León, a charter dated from the 13th-15th centuries, as Ranedo, from Latin ranetum, meaning a place rich in frogs. "de la Vega" recalls that the village is located in the plain (vega) surrounding river Carrión. The ruined Santa María de la Vega monastery, founded in 1215 by Rodrigo Rodríguez de Lara and Inés Pérez Girón, active until the 18th century, was listed in 1931 as a National Monument.
Albalá de la Vega was listed in the Presentaciones as Aluarazar, a name of Arabic origin meaning "the Royal cell"; the village was probably granted by a king to Mozarab and Morisco colonists.
Moslares de la Vega was named for moler, "a millstone", or muela, "lupine". The village church houses a famous statue of the "Cristo del Amparo" (16th century).
Santillán de la Vega was named for its patron saint, St. Julian.
