Presentation of Tabanera de Cerrato

The municipality of Tabanera de Cerrato (135 inhabitants in 2019 vs. 668 in 1950; 4,634 ha; municipal website) is located 45 km east of Palencia.

wPWTabanera was named for horseflies (tábanos) rather than for the Latin verb tabere, "to melt", or for tabes saliu, "sterile soil". The place was mentioned, as Tavanera, in the Palenzuela Charter granted in 1072-1109 by King Alfonso VI. The neighborhood includes the deserted villages of Olmos, Ontanilla and Oruejo, where a watermill is still standing on the brook flowing from Tabanera to Palenzuela, and Pozuelo ("small well"), at the brook's source.
The place was reconquered from the Moors in the 9th century by Alfonso III the Great; an earlier church dedicated to St. Stephen was erected in the 12th-13th century in Romanesque style, to be subsequently replaced by the present-day's church.

In the middle of the 16th century, Tabanera was part of the royal domain. The village was acquired in 1561 by Juan Manrique, Philip II's councillor, to be soon transferred to Admiral Enriquez. Tabanera was disputed in the middle of the 18th century by a long court case that opposed the Duchess of Alba to the Count of Benavente.
