The municipality of Felanitx (Spanish, Felanich; 17,333 inhabitants in 2017, 16,957 ha; municipal website) is located 50 km east of Palma de Mallorca. The municipality is made of the town of Felanitx (9,888 inh.) and of the villages of Cas Concos (960 inh.), Es Carritxó (203 inh.), S'Horta (1,248 inh.), Portocolom (4,586 inh.), Son Mesquida (367 inh.), Son Negre (235 inh.), Son Proenç (313 inh.), Son Valls (193 inh.), Cala Ferrera (279 inh.), and Caló de ses Dones (209 inh.).

Felanitx was named for the thinleaf false brome (Brachypodium phoenicoides_(L.) Roem. & Schult), a perennial rhizomatous grass called fenàs in Catalan.
Felanitx was granted to Nunyo Sanç, Count of Roussillon, after the Christian reconquest. The town was chartered in 1300 by Jaume II's Ordinacions. The Revolt of the Brotherhoods (1521-1523) against Charles V culminated in Felanitx with the assassination of the Mayor, Onofre Ferrandell.
Mostly living from wine production, Felanitx was granted the title of ciutat in 1886 by Regent Maria-Cristina, being the third ciutat in Majorca after Palma and Alcúdia.

The Santueri castle was erected on a rocky spur (408 m) located south-east of the town. The name of the castle indicates it as probably built on the remains of an older sanctuary, maybe Roman or even prehistoric. Erected during the Muslim period, and mentioned as Castri de Santueri on a document dated 1228, the castle was seized by James I in 1231. The fortress was significantly restored in the 14th century. Manned by a small garrison (three in peace time, 30 in wartime), the castle was never involved in any historical event but during the Revolt of the Brotherhoods, when used by the mascarats loyal to the king as a safe shelter. Decommissioned, the castle was sold in 1811 to a private owner.

Flag of Felanitx

The anthem and flag of Felanitx are prescribed by a Resolution adopted on 8 January 2001 by the Majorca Insular Council, promulgated on 16 January 2001 by the President of the Council and published on 31 March 2001 in the Spanish official gazette, No. 78, p. 12,242 (text).
The flag is described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular, with the four Catalan red stripes, charged in the center with the chalice from the coat of arms of the municipality.
