Presentation of Inca

The municipality of Inca (31,255 inhabitants in 2017, therefore the third most populated municipality in the island; 5,865 ha) is located 30 km north-east of Palma de Mallorca.

Inca is of unknown etymology. Some scholars have pointed out a potential pre-Roman, old root, "qariat inqar". Other say that the name of the town was coined during the Muslim occupation, as Inkan, "a hill" in Berber language.
During the Roman period, Inca was a post on the road connecting the two main settlements of the island, Pollentia (Alcúdia) and Palmera (Palma). The village developed around a mosque during the Muslim period, soon becoming the capital of a flourishing district encompassing Búger, Campanet, Mancor de la Vall, Sa Pobla y Selva.
After the Christian reconquest, Inca became a center of shoe-making, In 1900, Inca was granted the title of ciudad by Queen Maria Christina. Shoe-making, then the main source of income at the local level, progressively disappeared and was substituted by tourism.

Flag of Inca

The flag of Inca (photo, photo), as seen in June 2009 at the Town Hall, is yellow with four red horizontal stripes, charged in the center with the municipal coat of arms placed on a white square. The coat of arms is a lozengy shield with a blue border, "Or four pallets gules a fess azure charged with a dog argent".
The coat of arms of Inca is one of the oldest in Majorca, dating back to the 13th century. The lgend says that the Arab lord who ruled Inca and Alfábia plead allegiance to King James I and added a dog to his coat of arms as a symbol of his loyalty.
