Presentation of Sant Joan

The municipality of Sant Joan (Spanish, San Juan; 2,064 inhabitants in 2017, 3,851 ha; municipal website) is located 40 km due east of Palma de Mallorca.

Sant Joan originates in the Muslim village of Alhamar, transferred to Pere de Palau after the Christian reconquest. In 1235, the village was acquired by Arias Yánez, a Portuguese knight from São João de Ver (Coimbra), who renamed it to Sant Joan de Sineu. The settlement was granted the title of vila in 1300.
rom 1322 to 1343, Sant Joan was part of the Barony owned by Arias Ferradis. Several villagers supported the Revolt of the Brotherhoods (1521-1523) against Charles V.
In the beginning of the 20th century, Antoni Oliver d'Els Calderers (1863-1936) imported to the village agricultural techniques and machinery he had observed during his travels in Italy, Switzerland, the Netherlands and France, leading to the establishment of the Caixa Rural de Sant Joan (1903) and of the Sindicat Agrícola Catòlic (1919). The Els de Calderes manor, surrounded by gardens and orchards, is now a museum open to visit.

Flag of Sant Joan

The flag (photo) and coat of arms of Sant Joan are prescribed by a Resolution adopted on 8 January 2001 by the Majorca Insular Council, promulgated on 16 January 2001 by the President of the Council and published on 31 March 2001 in the Spanish official gazette, No. 78, p. 12,242 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: In rectangular shape, with three white, red, and white horizontal stripes of equal width, charged in the center with the coat of arms of the municipality.
Coat of arms: In irregular shape, on a celestial blue background a white lamb on a book, turned to the left but with the crowned head looking at right, holding a white pennant charged with a purple cross. In the center of the emblem is represented a scallop above a fantasy beast.

The symbols were unveiled on 4 January 2001 during the celebration of the 700th anniversary of the foundation of the town, prescribed in James I's "Ordinations".
