The municipality of Alaraz (547 inhabitants in 2010; 4,917 ha) is located in the southeast of the Province of Salamanca, on the border with Province of Ávila, 40 km from Salamanca.
Alaraz was mentioned for the first time in 1409, as a village depending on Alba de Tormes. Mentioned in 1265 as Santa María del Campo, Alaraz must have been resettled by Moriscos and Mozarabs - "Al Haraz" means in Arabic "a cropped field".

Symbols of Alaraz

The flag of Alaraz is prescribed by a Resolution adopted on 26 April 1996 by the Salamanca Provincial Government, signed on 2 May 1996 by the President of the Government, and published on 16 May 1996 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 93 (text).
The flag is described as follows:

Flag: Quadrangular, conterembraced gules and argent. In the center of the flag is placed the municipal coat of arms surmounted by the Royal crown closed of the reigning Spanish monarchy.

The coat of arms of Alaraz is prescribed by a Resolution adopted on 17 November 1995 by the Salamanca Provincial Government, signed on 23 November 1995 by the President of the Government, and published on 13 December 1995 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 237 (text).
The coat of arms is described as follows:

Coat of arms: Per fess, 1. Gules a moun argent ensigned with a cross or in base a crescent of the first, 2. Checky eight pieces argent seven pieces azure. The shield surmounted by a Royal Spanish crown.
