Presentation of Macotera

The municipality of Macotera (1,345 inhabitants in 2010; 3,293 ha) is located in the north-east of the Province of Salamanca, 50 km from Salamanca.

Isabel Jiménez García (b. 1949 in Macotera) was elected Mayor of Macotera in 2007 and has been serving as the President of the Government of Salamanca Province since 2003.
Macotera is the birth place of Cardinal Miguel García Cuesta (1803-1873), appointed Bishop of Jaca (1848), Archbishop of Santiago de Compostela (1851) and Cardinal-Priest of St. Prisca (1861). Elective Representative at the Constitutional Cortes in 1869 and Senator of Biscay in 1872, he attempted to prevent the Spanish Government to interfere with the management of the Church and was forbidden to attend the Vatican I Council (1869-1870).

Symbols of Macotera

The flag of Macotera is prescribed by a Decree adopted on 4 July 1997 by the Salamanca Provincial Government, signed on 9 July 1997 by the President of the Government, and published on 21 July 1997 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 130 (text).
The flag is described as follows:

Flag: Quadrangular flag, with proportions 1:1, tierced per bend sinister white, red and white. In the middle of the flag is placed the municipal coat of arms in full colors, surmounted with a Royal Spanish crown.

The Royal Academy of History found no objection to validate the proposed flag. The height of the red stripe is 1/3 of the flag's height.
[Boletín de la Real Academia de la Historia, 1999, 196, 1: 163]

The coat of arms of Macotera is prescribed by Decree No. 2,183, adopted on 5 August 1962 by the Spanish Government and published on 7 September 1962 in the Spanish official gazette, No. 215, p. 12,716 (text).
The arms, which were validated by the Royal Academy of History, are described as follows:

Coat of arms: Per pale, 1. Argent a holly oak vert charged with an image of the Blessed Virgin, 2. Vert a haystack argent. The shield surmounted with a Royal crown.

The 1st quarter represents the patron saint of Macotera for more than 500 years, the Virgin of the Holly Oak (Virgen de la Encina, presentation), to which a chapel is dedicated. The Virgin of the Holly Oak is also the patron saint of El Bierzo region and of the towns of Ponferrada (León), Carriches (Toledo), Baños de la Encina (Jaén), Arceniega (Álava), Aldehuela de Jerte (Caceres), and Hoyo de Manzanares (Madrid).
