Presentation of Valdelosa

The municipality of Valdelosa (498 inhabitants in 2010; 6,343 ha; municipal website) is located in the northeast of Salamanca Province, on the border with Zamora Province, 30 km from Salamanca.

Valdelosa appeared in the history in the 12th century, as a village depending on the Templar Commandery of Zamayón.
Most of the municipal territory is covered with woods, including the biggest and oldest alcornocal in Castilla y León. An alcornocal, named for the holly oak (alcornoque, Quercus suber), is a dehesa (dry pasture) planted with holly oaks; in the past, an alcornocal was mostly used for the production of cork and timber and as a grazing place for sheep. More recently, the rich biodiversity of alcornocales has been recognized; for instance, several medicinal, aromatic and melliferous plants grow under the oaks. The municipality of Valdelosa, owner of the "alcornocal, has set up a plan of cork exploitation, made of ten different zones, aimed at maintaining a sustainable production; the collective management of the Valdelosa alcornocal seems to have started in the 17th century.

Symbols of Valdelosa

The flag of Valdelosa is prescribed by a Decree adopted on 24 June 1994 by the Salamanca Provincial Government, signed on 6 July 1994 by the President of the Government, and published on 18 July 1994 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 237 (text).
The flag is described as follows:

Flag: Divided per bend argent and vert. In the middle of the flag is placed the municipal coat of arms, surmounted with the Royal crown of the reigning Spanish monarchy.

The coat of arms of Valdelosa is prescribed by a Decree adopted on 21 May 1993 by the Salamanca Provincial Government, signed on 20 December 1993 by the President of the Government, and published on 11 January 1994 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 6 (text).
The coat of arms is described as follows:

Coat of arms: [Per pale,] 1. Chaussé argent a flagstone [losa] vert and vert, 2. Gules a St. John or Maltese Cross argent. The shield surmounted with a Royal Spanish crown.

The Royal Academy of History rejected the proposed flag because it includes a coat of arms previously rejected by the Academy (Boletín de la Real Academia de la Historia, 1996, 193, 1: 187).
