Presentation of Las Cabezas de San Juan

The municipality of Las Cabezas de San Juan (6,292 inhabitants in 2008; 22,970 ha; municipal website), is located 60 km south of Seville.
On 1 January 1820, General Rafael del Riego (1794-1821), one of the leaders of the Liberal insurrection against King Ferdinand VII, proclaimed at Las Cabezas de San Juan, where he was stationed with his revolted troops, the reestablishment of the 1812 Constitution.

Symbols of Las Cabezas de San Juan

The flag and arms (municipal website) of Las Cabezas de San Juan, adopted on 27 November 2008 by the Municipal Council and submitted on 9 February 2009 to the Directorate General of the Local Administration, are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 14 May 2009 by the Directorate General of the Local Administration and published on 2 June 2009 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 104, p. 55 (text).
The "modified" symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular flag, made of three stripes, the middle one being larger, with the following colours and dimensions, from top to bottom: upper stripe, green (1/4; Pantone 356), middle stripe, white (2/4) with the municipal shield in the middle, and lower stripe, light blue (1/4).
Coat of arms: Or a castle surmounted by two hands handcuffed and tied by a chain broken in the middle, the castle and the hands proper and the chain sable. A bordure gules with the writing in letters argent fimbriated sable "AYUNTAMIENTO CONSTITUCIONAL DE LAS CABEZAS DE SAN JUAN" [Constitutional municipality of Las Cabezas de San Juan].

The flag in actual use shows the former, original version of the coat of arms (image).
The coat of arms recalls the proclamation made in 1820 by General Riego.

Former symbols of Las Cabezas de San Juan

The former, original flag and arms of Las Cabezas de San Juan, adopted on 29 June 1994 and validated by the Royal Academy of Córdoba, are prescribed by Decree No. 245, adopted on 10 October 1995 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 29 November 1995 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 153, p. 11,277 (text). This was confirmed by a Decree adopted on 30 November 2004 by the Directorate General of the Local Administration and published on 20 December 2004 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 246, pp. 28,986-29,002 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular, in proportions 11:18, made of three parallel stripes perpendicular to the hoist, the first green, the second white and the third celestial blue, the central stripe being twice higher than the outer stripes. In the middle of the flag, the town's coat of arms.
Coat of arms: Or a castle proper masoned azure surrounded in chief by two right hands proper handcuffed and tied by a chain sable broken in the middle. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

Submunicipal entity of Marismillas

The flag and arms of Marismillas, adopted on 21 September 2006 by the Municipal Council and submitted on 3 October 2006 to the Directorate General of the Local Administration, are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 11 October 2006 by the Directorate General of the Local Administration and published on 26 October 2006 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 208, pp. 12-13 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Panel in proportions 3:2 (length per hoist), green, with a vertical stripe at hoist and an other in the middle, both blue outlined white and covering 1/3 of the length. In the upper angle of the hoist a hand proper holding three white cotton flowers with black stems and two golden spikes.
Coat of arms: Per bend wavy argent, 1. Azure, 2. Vert. All over a dexter hand proper holding two wheat spikes or and a branch of cotton with three flowers argent slipped sable. The shield surmounted with a Spanish Royal crown closed.

The spikes represent agriculture, while cotton is the dominant crop. Green represents the fertile soil while blue represents the marsh (marisma) and the clarity of the sky.
