Presentation of Magán

The municipality of Magán (3,401 inhabitants in 2018; 2,900 ha; municipal website) is located 20 km north-east of Toledo.

Magán is named for a fortress once defended by Sufi monk-soldiers nad seized by García Ibañez, an Asturian-Leonese lord who supported Alfonso VI in the reconquest of Toledo.
In the 13th century, a part of the municipal territory was transferred to the Order of Monfragüe, which was subsequently merged into the Order of Calatrava.

Symbols of Magán

The flag of Magán (photo, photo) is prescribed by an Order issued on 9 November 1998 by the Government of Castilla-La Mancha and published on 20 November 1998 in the official gazette of Castilla-La Mancha, No. 54, p. 9,045 (text).
The flag is described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular panel, twice longer than wide (2:1), yellow (old gold). In the center, the municipal coat of arms.

The coat of arms of Magán is prescribed by an Order issued on 9 November 1998 by the Government of Castilla-La Mancha and published on 20 November 1998 in the official gazette of Castilla-La Mancha, No. 54, p. 9,045 (text).
The coat of arms is described as follows:

Coat of arms: Spanish shield divided in four parts:
- A castle or masoned sable port azure on a red (Bordeaux) field;
- A lion purpure (red-violet) rampant (the right foreleg raised), the claws and the tongue red, on a field argent;
- A wheat spike, or on a green background;
- A lyra or on a red (Bordeaux) background.
Laurel leaves, dark green, bordering the shield (recalling the old coat of arms of Magán dated 1878). The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

The Royal Academy of History rejected the proposed arms.
The castle is represented as a fortress' gate surrounded by two towers without crenels. The arms of the kings of León are included without any justification. Moreover, it is not acceptable to "translate" the heraldic colors. These flaws, which prevent the approval of the proposal, have to be corrected.
The Royal Academy validated "without any inconvenience" the single-colored flag, provided the coat of arms features on it is corrected.
