Presentation of Turleque

The municipality of Turleque (749 inhabitants in 2019 vs. 2,259 in 1960; 10,100 ha) is located 50 km south-east of Toledo and 30 km east of Orgaz.

Turleque is of mixed Latin and Mozarab etymology: "tur" comes from Latin turris, "a tower", while -eque is a typical Mozarab diminutive suffix; accordingly, Turleque means "Small Tower".
Turleque, an old Mozarab foundation, was re-settled in 1248 by Friar Guillen de Mondragón, Commander of Consuegra for the Order of Saint John. Turleque was granted the status of villa in 1751 by King Ferdinand VI.

Symbols of Turleque

The flag of Turleque (image), adopted on 12 July 2018 by the Municipal Council, is prescribed by Order No. 35 issued on 9 March 2020 by the Government of Castilla - La Mancha and published on 16 March 2020 in the official gazette of Castilla - La Mancha (text).
The flag is described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular, divided into four equal rectangles, blue in the hoist's upper angle and in the fly's lower angle, the other, white. In the center, superimposed to the four rectangles, a Maltese cross in width 2/3 of the panel's width, perpendicularly divided into four quarters, white on the blue rectangles and blue on the white rectangles.

The flag was designed by Pedro Peinado, from the "Los Amigos del Cerro" ethnographic association, with the advice of the Sociedad Española de Vexilología.

The coat of arms of Turleque, designed from scratch, is "Per fess, 1a. Azure a Cross of St. John argent, 1b. Argent a castle argent on a base proper, 2. A windmill argent roofed sable cantonned in chief by a branch of olive and bunch of grapes all proper. The shield surmounted by a scroll inscribed 'LA JUSTICIA FORJA LA PAZ' (Justice Forges Peace). Beneath the shield two spikes or crossed in saltire".

The arms are based on the municipal arms reported in Cardinal Lorenzana's Descripciones - "the shield of St. John" and in a sigillographical report dated 1876 - "a castle on a base". The third quarter recalls the location of the municipality in La Mancha (windmill) and its main crops.
