Presentation of Castronuevo de Esgueva

The municipality of Castronuevo de Esgueva (388 inhabitants in 2009; 2,944 ha; unofficial website) is located in the northeast of Valladolid Province, 15 km from Valladolid.

Castronuevo de Esgueva was built on the site of a Roman settlement, as evidenced by several artefacts, including coins, found there. The name of the village (lit. New Castle) seems to indicate that an old castle might have existed in the Visigothic times, replaced in the 9th century by a new one after the reconquest of the area by King Alfonso III the Great. The old citadel, known as Castriel de Ferruz, was part of a defence belt protecting the valley of Duero; subsequently known as Castil de la Vega, the place was deserted in the 18th century. Similarly, the settlement of Polvoreda was deserted in the 16th century.
Castronuevo was a Royal domain managed by the Council of Valladolid.
