Introduction

The Kin-der-Kids were an early U.S. newspaper comics series by German-American painter Lyonel Feininger and published by the Chicago Sunday Tribune in 1906-1907. Most comics occupied a full-page and were rendered in color.

On the first plate of The Kin-der-Kids abroad (the first installment of the series, 6 May 1906, Chicago Tribune see Comic.de or Uncommon Travel Germany) a harbour scene is depicted: The larger element of the background is the passenger steamship City of Podunk; at its prow on a short staff is a blue flag with a white six pointed star standing on a tip.

It's probably supposed to be a houseflag, as the ship also flies the Stars & Stripes from the stern. But the City of Podunk doesn't play a role in the comic, as far as I know. However, a better view of the plate is at the web site of The Museum of Modern Art, New York: It's zoomable quite a bit, revealing the star to be a normal six-pointed star, rather than a lean one. It also gives the suggestion that the lighter blue colour of the flag is merely caused by the white of the paper, and isn't necessarily lighter than the Stars & Stripes flags on top of the buildings, in the drawing slightly higher and to the left. (Note the Stars & No Stripes, by the way.) (I guess the only City of Podunk would be Rogers City; all others Podunks seem of less inhabited status.)
Peter Hans van den Muijzenberg, 28 November 2010

It's very close to the [7-pointed] houseflags of A.P. Møller (Maersk Line) or Holm & Molzen.
