Presentation of Carignan

Carignan (2,810 inhabitants in 2021; 1,401 ha) is a commune in the Ardennes department. It was known as Yvoy or Yvois until 1662.

Carignan was, under the name Epoissium, Eposium, Epusum or Ivosium, a military settlement of the Romans. Gaugericus, bishop of Cambrai, was born in Eposium around 550. A little later it was the home of a stylite ascetic named Wulflaich.

As Yvois, it was part of the Duchy of Burgundy in the 15th century. It changed hands between the Habsburg Netherlands and France several times, until it was assigned to France by the 1659 Treaty of the Pyrenees. In 1662, the territory of Yvois, corresponding approximately to the current canton of Carignan, was erected into the Duchy of Carignan by Louis XIV for the benefit of Eugène-Maurice de Savoie, Count of Soissons, Prince of Carignan in Piedmont and the city loses its name to become Carignan. The Savoy family retained the duchy until 1751, when it was sold to Louis Jean Marie de Bourbon, Duke of Penthièvre. His daughter received the duchy as a dowry when she married Philippe d'Orléans, who was the last possessor. Thanks to its industries, the commune developed during the 19th century. The railway line from Sedan to Montmédy was opened in 1861. Napoleon III made a brief stay in Carignan on August 30, 1870 before returning to Sedan.

Flag of Carignan

The flag of Carignan, observed in 2014 during twinning ceremonies with Carignan-de-Bordeaux (Gironde) is white with the coat of arms and the name of the commune: photo (2014).

The coat of arms of Carignan is blazoned: Azure a fess Or charged with a heart of the field.

This coat of arms only dates from 1824 and was attributed to the commune by Louis XVIII. From 1341 to 1659, the city had used the coat of arms granted in 1341 by Jean l'Aveugle: Quarterly, 1. and 4. Argent a lion armed and langued Gules with tail forked, 2. and 3. barry of 10 pieces Argent and Azure, a lion armes and langued Gules.
