A colour poster released by the tourism office of Marseilles (image) shows a huge flag hoisted over the St. John's tower, located at the entrance of the Vieux-Port. The flag is white with a light blue cross but the cross is resarcelee, that is the cross is bordered by a thin light blue stripe separated from the cross by a thin white stripe.
This cross, probably an artistic licence, might have been the source for the logo of the municipality of Marseilles, which shows a similar cross.

I have just been watching a BBC tv programme broadcast as part of their continuing education service. It was a combined language-learning programme cum travelogue filmed in Provence, including locations in Aix and Marseilles.

One of Marseilles sequences showed the presenter sailing out from the Vieux Port on a traditional wooden boat which was flying a flag which is clearly a variation on the traditional Marseille "blue cross on white field". It also seems to reflect an historical flag of Marseilles shown on ancient flag charts, but having a canton with the blue and white reversed.

The copyright date on the programme was 2002, and in other sequences people were buying things in francs but the euro prices were also shown, so my guess is that the location shots were probably filmed about four years ago.
