Régates de Royan (website), founded in 1851, is the third oldest French yacht club after Société des Régates du Havre (1838) and Société Nautique de la Baie de Saint-Malo (1848).
Its burgee is vertically divided blue-white-red with a black anchor in the white stripe and a black "R" in the blue and red stripes.

Regatta were first organized in Royan on 10 and 11 August 1851 by the newly founded Société des Régates de Royan. The regattas attracted much more people than expected; from 1855 onward, they were scheduled to 15 August, the Empire's Day, and a special passenger service was offered between Bordeaux and Royan by steamboats.

The Royan regatta were quite unique in the south-west of France at the time; the sailboats that entered the competition were the most modern, often engaged in other international regattas. The first winner, schooner "La Brise", was compared with "America", winner of the Cowes regatta the same year. Accordingly, the regatta were the main event of the summer season; their contribution to the fame of Royan is attested by the swift increase in the number of summer tourists, from 5,000 in 1850 to 15,000 in 1860 and 40,000 in 1870.

Royan soon took over the organization of the regattas from "foreign" hands (that is, from Bordeaux). The yacht-club was renamed to Société des Régates de Royan, with deputy Michel Montané as its president; in 1857, the municipality became the official patron and organizer of the regattas.

During the interbellum, the SRR organized the Royan-Arcachon race, in partnership with the Société Nautique d'Arcachon, and, from 1927 to 1940, the Royan-La Baule race, in partnership with Sport Nautique de la Gironde. This was the most important yachting race in the Bay of Biscay. After the Second World War, the SRR established a sailing school in 1951; port infrastructure was modernized and the SRR was in charge until 1977, of the management of the new marina completed in 1968.

The burgee of the SRR was adopted in 1914/ Permission was granted by the Ministry of Navy to use an anchor, at the time the exclusive symbol of the French Navy (source: C-Royan website).
