The municipality of Porto-Vecchio (Corsican, Portivechju; 11,748 inhabitants in 2018, therefore Corsica's 3rd most populous municipality; 16,865 ha) is located on the south-eastern coast of Corsica.

Porto-Vecchio means "Old Port", which may refer to the old Roman port. The area was subsequently deserted because of malarial.
The town was refounded in 1539 by the Bank of Saint George at Genoa on a 70 meters hill overlooking the gulf. Malaria soon killed most of the Genoese settlers. Another colony suffered the same fate in 1546. Sampiero Corso occupied the town for a few months in 1564.
Population started to resettle the area in the aftermath of the marsh drainage projects instituted under the Second Empire, with minimal sucess. During World War II, the presence of allied troops prompted the eradication of malaria to preserve the health of soldiers and airmen. This succeeded trough drainage, filling and spraying, making the region newly attractive. The current population derives from an expansion that started about 1950.
Porto Vecchio became a major tourism resort in the 1980s, served by the airport of Figari.

Flag of Porto-Vecchio

The flag hoisted on the Town Hall of Porto-Vecchio (photo) is white with the municipal coat of arms, "Azure a tower argent on a sea argent sumounted by a pair of scales or". This is a variant of the traditional coat of arms, "Gules a tower argent masoned sable on a mount vert sumounted by a pair of scales or".
The indoor version of the flag (photo) has a different drawing of the tower, masoned azure.
