The municipality of Montauban-de-Bretagne (6,086 inhabitants in 2019; 4,542 ha; municipal website) is located 30 km west of Rennes. The municipality was established in 2019 as the merger of the former municipalities of Montauban-de-Bretagne (Montauban before 17 November 1995) and Saint-M'Hervon (583 inh.; 246 ha).

Montauban has been known since the 8th century, then known as Saint-Éloi. Tradition tells that St. Eligius, having come to visit the Breton king St. Judicaël in the 7th century, left in the area such a vivid memory of his virtues that, later, the inhabitants erected in his honor a sanctuary, which was the first church of Montauban. This church was given in fact at the beginning of the 9th century to the abbey of Saint-Méen. The feudal domain was established as a county in the 12th century. Its first owner, Olivier I, grandson of a viscount of Rohan, built the castle on a whitish mound, formed by shelly limestone, known as Mons Albanus (Latin, White Mount), subsequently Montauban. In the 14th century, the town took the name of the domain. The same family ruled the county until the heiress married Louis de Rohan-Guéméné in 1443.
is lightSaint M'Hervon is named for St. Hervon the Exorcist, an Irish monk who lived near Landerneau and was venerated in Brittany as early as in the 6th century, as St. Hervé or St. Hervon. Here, the addition of letter M to his name must be a linguistical evolution, maybe related to a title given to the saint in Gaelic language.
