Presentation of Peyrehorade

Peyrehorade (3,673 inhabitants in 2021; 1,611 ha) is a commune in the Landes department.

In the 11th century, the castle of Aspremont was built, reinforced in the 13th century with a stone keep, of which only ruins remain. It was the residence of the viscounts of Orthe in the 15th and 16th centuries. In the 13th century, another keep was built on the edge of the river of the “Gaves réunis” (formed by the confluence of the Gave de Pau and the Gave d'Oloron), to monitor and protect river traffic, but also to collect a tax on passages. It was razed around 1515, then replaced by the Château de Montréal.
At the start of 1367, a meeting took place at the Château d'Aspremont between the Black Prince, Pierre I of Castile and Charles the Bad. In 1442, the troops of Charles VII, after taking the town of Dax on August 3, came to seize the castle, which had sided with the English.
During the Wars of Religion, in 1569, the Château d'Aspremont was burned down and dismantled by Montgommery.
In 1793, the Château de Montréal was seized and then used in various ways until around 1930, when it was restored by a private individual. Today it is the town hall of the village. The Saint Martin church was built from 1852 to 1857, on the site of an 11th century chapel.
In 2014, 2018 and 2019, Peyrehorade suffered severe flooding, with the water reaching a height of over five meters in some places.

The arms of Peyrehorade are blazoned
Quarterly 1. and 4. Or a lion Gules, armes and langued Sable; 2. and 3. Gules three leopards Or armed an langued Sable.

The rugby club, founded in 1904 as Aspremontoise, was renamed to Peyrehorade Sports in 1921. In 1942, the green and white colors were substituted to the original red and white ones, for the sake of differentiation from neighboring US Dax and because there was no more red cloth available locally.
In 1994, Peyrehorade won its main title, the Second (indeed, third-tier) League. In 2007, the rugby section of Peyrehorade Sports became autonomous as Peyrehorade Sport Rugby Pays d'Orthe.

As a small village's team, the club was "pillaged" by its prestigious neighbors who quickly enrolled their most promising young players, such as Michel Taffary (b. 1950), hired by Racing Club de France in 1970; Christophe "Titou" Lamaison (b. 1971), hired by Aviron Bayonnais in 1990, winner of the Champion Cup in 1997 with CA Brive and member of the French national team that claimed the Grand Slam in 1997 and 1998; Jeff Dubois (b. 1973), son of the legendary coach Gaston Dubois (b. 1930), hired in 1996 by US Dax, then winner of the 2005 Champions Cup with Stade Toulousain; and Julien Peyrelongue (b. 1981), hired by Biarritz Olympique in 2000, winner of the Top 16 in 2002, 2005 and 2006 and of the Challenge Cup in 2012.
