Presentation of Saint-Vincent-de-Tyrosse

Saint-Vincent-de-Tyrosse (7,956 inhabitants in 2021; 2,098 ha) is a commune in the Landes department.

Of Iberian or Ligurian origin, Tyrosse was from before Christ, as evidenced by the many tumuli (funeral mounds), the place of an important pastoral activity. The Roman legions set up a rest camp there.
During the Middle Ages, the pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela passed there. The name Tirosse appeared for the first time in a document from the year 843 announcing the marriage of Viscount Fortaner de Maremne with Miramonde de Louvignier. Saint-Vincent-de-Tyrosse played an essential role in the struggle which opposed the English and the French for several centuries. Because of its location as a meeting point between the "Grandes Landes" road coming from Paris and Bordeaux and that of the "Petites Landes" road coming from Toulouse, Tartas and Dax, it had some economic importance and Louis XII opened the first royal posts in 1511.
Subsequently, the royal and imperial armies who went to meet the Spaniards were able to appreciate its tradition of welcome and hospitality.
The 19th century was decisive for the development of the town, which had only 637 inhabitants in 1836. The opening of the Paris-Bayonne railway line in 1854 increased its economic role, especially since the first shoe factory. The vocation of Tyrosse is then sealed: a commercial and industrial center in the heart of its territory. During the first half of the 20th century, the city asserted itself as the capital of the canton, relying on its role as a crossroads of major communication routes and secondary roads linking the communes of Marensin to those of Chalosse and the Basque Country.
