The municipality of Halluin (20,808 inhabitants in 2018; 1,256 ha; municipal website) is located on the border with Belgium, 10 km of Tourcoing. Halluin jointly operates a marina on river Lys / Leie with the Belgian municipality of Menen.

Halluin was known until the 19th century under several written forms: Haluwin, Halewin, Halowin, Haluing, Halwin, Haluyn.
The parish priest Alphonse-Marie Coulon (Histoire de Halluin) claims that Halluin was originally Hallu's domain, the suffix -in meaning "a home". Other etymologists claim that Halle meant "a warehouse" and win, "wine".
Hallawyn was first mentioned in a donation signed in 1066 by Count of Flanders Baldwin V.

Flag of Halluin

The flag of Halluin (photo) is white with the municipal logo, which was adopted in 2014, and a thin yellow stripe at the top.

The new logo was received with irony on social networks. The Mayor, Gustave Dassonville, answered that the new municipal team, him included, did not like "that much" the old logo, which looks like "Halluin's 'H' with the socialism's ball and chain". The logo was "derived from the historical coat of arms", keeping only one out of the three lions "for more fluidity and modernity". The blue and yellow colors, also bitterly criticized, are those of the town's sports clubs.

The historical arms of Halluin, "Argent three lions sable langued gules armed and crowned or", were assigned by Th. Leuridan (Armorial des communes du département du Nord, 1909) as the arms of the Hallewin / Halluin lineage, lords of the town until the 16th century. They were succeeded by the houses of Croÿ Ligne-Cro&ymul;, Hénin-Liétard and Orléans, also lords of Comines.
These arms are shown for Daniel, lord of Halluin, on folio 80r of the Gelre Armorial (image).

The former flag of Halluin was white with the former municipal logo, which was adopted in 1991.
The "H" is a symbol of dynamism; its blueish-gray color refers to the field argent of the coat of arms. The orange sphere is a symbol of living together and energy concentration.
