Presentation of Dieppe

The municipality of Dieppe (28,561 inhabitants in 2018; 1,167 ha) is located 60 km north of Rouen.

Dieppe was first recorded as a small fishing settlement in 1030. The first port of the Kingdom of France in the 17th century, Dieppe was mostly destroyed by an Anglo-Dutch naval bombardment in 1694, during the Nine Years' War. Rebuilt after 1696 in a typical French classical style by architect Ventabren, Dieppe was popularised as a seaside resort during the 19th century.

During the Second World War, Dieppe was occupied by German naval and army forces after the fall of France in 1940. On 19 August 1942, Allied soldiers, mainly from the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division, landed at Dieppe in the hope of occupying the town for a short time, gaining intelligence and drawing the Luftwaffe into open battle. The Allies suffered more than 1,400 deaths, 913 Canadian, and 1,946 Canadian soldiers were captured. However, no major objectives were achieved. The port remained garrisoned by German forces until the conclusion of the Battle of Normandy. Dieppe was liberated on 1 September 1944, by soldiers from the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division.
Dieppe, a town in New Brunswick, received its present name in 1946, in honour of the commemoration of the 913 Canadian soldiers killed in the Dieppe Raid.
