Presentation of AgroParisTech

AgroParisTech (colloquially known as Agro; in full, Institut des Sciences et Industries du Vivant et de l'Environnement; website) is a public scientific, cultural and professional institution (EPSCP) under the authority of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry (MAAF). AgroParisTech is a grande école (an elite college, which is accredited to provide teaching and to award the title of MSc in Engineering, as well as various vocational masters, research masters and PhDs).

AgroParisTech counts 2,000 students (Master, MSc in Engineering and PhD), 230 teaching staff, and 520 administrative and technical staff. The institute is organized in 5 teaching and research departments and 24 research units, including 450 associate researchers (affiliated to other institutes).
AgroParisTech owns eight campuses in Paris (2, the administrative seat included), Grignon and Massy (Paris outskirts), Nancy (East France), Clermont-Ferrand (Center France), Montpellier (South France) and Kourou (French Guyana).

AgroParisTech was established in 2007 as the merger of three institutes:
- the Institut National Agronomique Paris-Grignon (INA-PG);
- the École Nationale Supérieure des Industries Agricoles et Alimentaires (ENSIA);
- the École Nationale du Génie Rural, des Eaux et des Forêts (ENGREF).

The INA-PG was established in 1971 as the merger of the École Nationale Supérieure d’Agriculture de Grignon, founded in 1826 by King Charles X as the Institution Royale Agronomique de Grignon, and of the Institut National Agronomique, founded in Versailles in 1848, suppressed in 1852 and re-founded in Paris in 1876 by Eugène Tisserand.
The ENSAIA was established in 1893 in Douai (North France) as the École Nationale des Industries Agricoles (ENIA), with the support of the local industrials. Renamed École Nationale Supérieure des Industries Agricoles et Alimentaires (ENSIA) in 1960, the institute was transferred to Massy in 1961.
The ENGREF was established in 1965 as the merger of the École Nationale des Eaux et Forêts (ENEF), founded in 1824 in Nancy as the École Royale Forestière, renamed in 1853 École Impériale Forestière and in 1873 École Nationale Forestière, and of the École Nationale du Génie Rural (ENGR), founded in 1919 as the École Supérieure du Génie Rural.

The INA-PG hit the headlines in 1974, when the agronomist René Dumont (1904-2001), retired Professor of Agricultural Development at INA, was the first ecologist candidate to compete at a French presidential election. Dumont received only 1.32% of the votes, but his campaign introduced the ecological issues in the national public debate.

Flag of AgroParisTech

The flag of AgroParisTech, used during the graduation ceremonies (photos), is white with the emblem of the institute in the middle.
The emblem of AgroParisTech is made of the writing "AgroParisTech", the "A" in white within a green parallelogram, "gro" in black, "Paris" in gray, and "Tech" in black. A kind of greyish horizontal wave is placed beneath "Agro". The full name of the institute is written in gray capital letters beneath "ParisTech", on a first line "Institut des Sciences et Industries du Vivant et de l'Environnement", and, on a second line, in italics, as the English rendition, "Paris Institute of Technology for Life, Food and Environmental Sciences".
