History of CMNC

Compagnie Marseillaise de Navigation Coloniale (CMNC) was created in 1940 by the French State (Vichy government) to manage the fleet seized from the Jewish shipowner Louis-Dreyfus.

The company operated six cargo ships, all renamed after stars. After the Liberation, the company was suppressed. Three of the six confiscated ships, MS Aldébaran (ex Léopold-L.D.), Fomalhaut (ex Louis-L.D.) and Céphée (ex François-L.D.) were given back to Louis-Dreyfus and took back their original name. Louis-Dreyfus also recovered MS Bételgeuse (ex Jean-L.D.), which had been seized by the Allied navy off Capetown in 1941 and allocated to the Forces Navales Françaises Libres (FNFL). MS Procyon, also seized and allocated to the FNFL, was sunk by a German submarine in December 1941 off Cape Farewell (Greenland). MS Persée was seized by Japan in Saigon in 1942, renamed Teihoku-Maru and sunk by an American submarine in August 1945 in the Sea of China.
