Presentation of Voies navigables de France

Voies navigables de France (France Waterways) was officially created by Law 91-1385 of 31 December 1991, published in the French official gazette on 1 January 1992, portant dispositions diverses en matière de transports (on diverse provisions regarding transportation). VNF is an EPIC (Etablissement public industriel and commercial - industrial and commercial public agency) supervized (placé sous la tutelle) by the Ministry in charge of the waterways (usually the Ministry of Transportation).
VNF is the follower of the venerable public agency created by Article 67 of the Law of 27 February 1912 with the same duties. The agency shall "ensure the operating, the improvement, the increase and the promotion of the waterways and their dependncies" (Article 124 paragraph I of the 1991 Finance Law 90-1168 of 29 December 1990, published in the French official gazette on 30 December 1990).

VNF exploits 6700 km of canals and navigable rivers, 2,000 items of infrastructure, and 800 square km of public lands alongside waterways. Besides technical matters, it cooperates with waterway users of all kinds. Five thousand employees, organized in 15 regional centres, work for VNF.

Flag of Voies navigables de France

The VNF flag was seen in August 2006, used as a jack on a moored boat, at Castelnaudary, in the Grand Bassin used to feed the Canal du Midi locks there.
The flag is horizontally divided green-blue, separated by a thin white wavy stripe, the white VNF initials coming out of the wave at the fly and white words voies navigables de france spread over the blue part.
