Introduction: Gosport Borough

"Gosport is a town, district and borough situated on the south coast of England, within the county of Hampshire. It has approximately 80,000 permanent residents with a further 5,000-10,000 during the summer months." (Wikipedia)
Valentin Poposki, 10 July 2011

The borough of Gosport on a peninsula on the western side of Portsmouth Harbour, opposite the city of Portsmouth, to which it is linked by the Gosport Ferry. It is said its name is derived from "goose."
The peninsula was settled in Anglo-Saxon times and was mentioned in the Anglosaxon Chronicle and the Domesday Book as Rughenor (rough bank or slope), the name coming from the point where the River Alver entered the Stokes Bay.
Because of its location Gosport has always been a major naval town associated with the defence and supply logistics and extensive fortifications were created. In 1678 Charles II had Fort James and Fort Charles built and bastions and double ditches encircle the town, later named the Gosport Lines. From that time on they were rebuilt, enlarged and extended, but today little remains. Most of the former naval and military installations were closed after the Second World War, leaving the fortifications and installations vacant and unused. In some cases museums have been opened to the public as tourism and heritage sites and there has been redevelopment of the harbour area as a marina.

Description of Gosport Flag
Gosport Borough Council

The light blue flag with the "God's Port - Our Haven" emblem used by Gosport Borough Council seems to have become the de facto flag of Gosport, although nothing official has been forth coming. Time will tell.

There is a car-flag for the Mayor which was seen on this photo (preserved on Web Archive). However a search of the official Gosport website makes no mention of the Mayor's Flag nor any other Borough flags.

City of Gosport Variant
1:2 Ratio

Apparently this flag is also available in the traditional 1:2 ratio shape, perhaps to make it look less out of place when flown alongside the Union Flag?

Gosport Flag Variant #2
Reported, Unverified

[] image located by Pete Loeser, 24 January 2021

This "Gosport Pride of Hampshire" county flag was reported, but turns out to only be on a "Jumbo Fridge Magnet Souvenir Gift", and it is doubtful it has ever existed in cloth. It's existence remains unverified and certainly not official.

This Gosport Flag manufacturer's variant is probably provided for sports fans and visitors, but certainly not official. This design has been offered up for most major English towns and cities, with the name changed on the horizontal arm of the traditional Saint George England Flag.

The Royal British Legion (RBL) is a British charity providing financial, social, and emotional support to members and veterans of the British Armed Forces, their families and dependents. The British Legion was founded in 1921.
The Royal Naval Association (RNA) was formed in 1950 evolving from the pre-existing Royal Naval Old Comrades Association which dated back to before the Second World War. Its membership includes both veterans and families of current and former Naval Service personnel, relatives and supporters of the Royal Navy.
Both charitable organizations have active chapter branches in Gosport and often participate in local holidays and events. The town is still home to HMS Sultan and a Naval Armament Supply Facility, as well as a Helicopter Repair base.
