Meaning:
In 1507 Bishop Smith (or Smyth) of Lincoln and Richard Sutton conceived the idea of founding a College. In 1509 the foundation stone of the college was laid. It was then called The King’s College of Brasenose, now generally known as B.N.C. The inescutcheon displays the arms of the Bishopric of Lincoln. The dexter side displays the personal arms of Bishop Smith, the sinister side those of Richard Sutton (horns) quartered with those of Southworth (crosses). On the flag the arms are simplified as follows: No changes are made on the dexter side; in centre the pattern of the inescutcheon fills the whole third, shield, mitre and scarves are omitted; on the sinister side the arms of Sutton and Southworth are not quartered but set in pale. Sutton had been the first layman to found a college.

Current Boat Club flag

The current flag is yellow with ratio 1:2. It is more or less a revival of the flag of the corresponding Isis Society. It displays the full arms of the college, having nearly the total flag height and superimposing a pair of black boat club oars in saltire.
