Linacre College
Coat of Arms:
Sable an open book proper bound Gules, the dexter page charged with the Greek Letter Alpha, the sinister page charged with the Greek Letter Omega, both Sable the whole between three Scallops Argent ordered 2:1.
Motto: No End to Learning
The college was founded in 1962 and was the 1st fully coeducational college in Oxford. The scallops alone are the family arms of the Linacre kin, of which the name giver Thomas Linacre (c. 1460 - 1524) was a member. He had been the doctor of King Henry VIII and Cardinal Wolsey and had also been the founder of the Royal College of Physicians. The college arms can be considered as having religious significance with the scallops referring to the Way of St. James the Elder. The Greek letters might have a Christian reference to God in the Book of Revelation. On the other hand they are symbolising the completeness of study, and an open book is a common symbol of education.
A picture postcard from 1991 displays different arms for the college. Those arms had been the university’s arms with an additional blue orle, charged with alternating scallops Argent and unrecognisable animal heads Argent crowned Or, four of both of them.
