Presentation of Akhmeta

The municipality of Akhmeta (44,800 inhabitants in 2002, 8,600 in the town proper; 2,248 sq. km) is located in Kakheti, northeastern Georgia, on the border with Russia (Chechenia and Daghestan). The main source of income is wine-growing, with some 5,000 ha of vineyards producing yearly 30,000-40,000 tons of grapes. The local walnut jam is also famous.
The municipality of Akhmeta was established in 1945 by separation from Telavi. The village of Akhmeta, formed by the merging of the two villages of Uto and Zhaluri once separated by cropped fields, was granted the status of borough in 1959 and of town in 1966.

Akhmeta was the place of two rebellions, the first raised in 1659 against the Persian rule by Bidzina Cholokashvili (canonized by the Georgian Orthodox Church), and the second raised in August 1924 against the Soviet regime by Kaikhosro (Kakuska) Cholokashvili (1888-1930), of the very same lineage, considered as a national hero in Georgia.
Akhmeta is the birth town of the judoka Zurab Zviadauri (b. 1981), gold medalist in the Athens 2004 Olympics (middleweight).
