Presentation of Gori

The municipality of Gori, named for Georgian "gora", "a hill", is the capital of the Shida Kartli Region (eastern Georgia). An important military stronghold in the Middle Ages, Gori maintains a strategic importance due to its location on the principal highway connecting the eastern and western parts of Georgia. Gori is also known as the birthplace of the Soviet leader Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin.

Flag of Gori

The flag and arms of Gori (video presentation, in Georgian) are prescribed by Decree No. 29, adopted on 18 August 2010 by the Municipal Council.

The State Council of Heraldry at the Parliament of Georgia, 8 February 2011

The flag is quartered red-blue by a red cross fimbriated white skewed to the hoist.
The flag must have been derived from the municipal coat of arms, described in Alexander Mikaberidze as follows:

The arms feature the following symbols related to the town's history:
1st quarter: The Church of Cross at Gori which is conveyed by a mountain of or with a cross of or above it. The church, built on a steep cliff on top of the mountain and seen from practically anywhere in Gori, was originally built in the 12th century.
2nd quarter: Three open books in honor of Jacob Gogebashvili, the famous Georgian educator, children's writer and journalist, who was born near Gori and studied at the Gori Seminary. The books also reflect Gori's status as a center of higher education.
3rd quarter: Three wheat sheaves symbolizing the region's fertility and richness.
4th quarter: A four-teer fortress on the mountain symbolizes the famous Gori fortress.
