Keratsini is a suburbs located in the western part of Piraeus. During the Greek Revolution Georgios Karaiskakis (a hero of the Greek War of Independence) settled in Keratsini and built fortifications, which existed until recently. In 1827 the town was destroyed by Kioutachis Pasha and remained deserted until the 1830s. In 1836 inhabitants began to settle and in 1870 the village became an independant community.
The area was made up of farmlands, and mixed farming was common. Urban development replaced much of the farmlands between the 1930s and the 1950s. After the arrival of refugees from Smyrna on January 1934 the area became a municipality, which took its current name in 1947. Today, most of the municipality is urbanized or residential. The industrial area, part of the port of Piraeus, lies to the southwest.

The flag of Keratsini (Kokkonis website) was white with the municipal emblem, which portrays Georgios Karaiskakis.
