Presentation of Janjina

The municipality of Janjina (593 inhabitants, 256 in the village of Janjina) is located in the center of the Pelješac (Sabbioncello / Punta Stagni / Stonski rat) peninsula, with acces to the sea on both sides of the peninsula. The municipality was established in 1997, seceding from Ston.
In the 15th century, the village was the seat of the Janjina Captaincy. The famous mathematician and physicist Marin Getaldić (Ghetaldus, 1568-1626) was briefly appointed Captain of Janjina, although he was dismissed after only six months "due to irresponsibility".

Proposed flag and arms of Janjina - Image by Željko Heimer, 13 June 2013

The article Janjina dobila grb i zastavu, published on 8 February 2008 in the regional newspaper Dubrovački vjesnik, claims that while the municipality was celebrating its 10th anniversary and its patron saint's day (St. Blasius), the coat of arms and the flag were "received". They are described as follows:

On a shield of blue background a depiction of St. Blasius sitting (image). St. Blasius has been the patron saint of the parish since 1628 and is shown on the coat of arms after the sculpture of the Prince's House, the seat of the former Captainship (military administration subdivision of the Republic of Ragusa) of Janjina, established in 1465. The flag is yellow, while the ceremonial gonfalon includes also branches of olive and grapevine. The flag and the coat of arms, as well as the small table flag, were made by the Heraldic Art company, from Rijeka, after the design was granted approval by the Croatian State Archive. The design of the coat of arms and flag costed the municipality 15,000 HRK (ca. 2,000 EUR).

The saint's pose on the proposed arms appears to be based on a stone statue (photo).

Officials of the municipality explained that the newspaper report was premature. The design is still not formally approved by the Central State Office for Administration. The Office had certain requests for improvement of the proposed design; this was done around the begining of 2008, but the formal decision has not been yet issued as of today.
